CBD boosts athletes’ performance

Several health benefits have been attributed to CBD. In this particular case we will talk about the benefit it has for athletes.

What is CBD?

CBD is a non-psychoactive compound derived from cannabis. It was legalized through the 2018 Farm Bill, however its advocates have been studying its benefits for years. It has also been approved by the FDA as an alternative for treating certain types of childhood epilepsy, and it works as a pain and stress reliever, especially if used as a topical.

CBD has advantages on the performance of athletes

A recent study on sports medicine shows the advantages of CBD on the performance of athletes, but both CBD and THC are closely linked to cannabis. Each, however, has different effects. THC is known to provide such a psychoactive effect, while CBD has more therapeutic benefits. For this reason the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibits the use of THC in sports.

The study published on July 6, 2020 showed the result of several studies and trials about CBD with one important conclusion; CBD can exert a range of physiological, biochemical and psychological effects with the potential to benefit athletes.

CBD can even be used as an oral supplement to relieve pain and anxiety, although it is sometimes used topically, as it allows to treat the exact area of the pain.

This research is constantly growing and helps to understand how CBD works in the body. Another of the many studies allowed examine clinical trials involving non-athletes. Based on this research it the conclusion was that “preclinical studies have observed robust anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, and analgesic effects of CBD in animal models.”

Other positive effects of CBD include; soothing for digestive discomfort and pain, for inflammation, reducing stress by relieving anxiety, increasing the quality of sleep.

We know that athletes are under constant stress due to the demands of participating in high performance sports, so CBD is the perfect choice for treating their physical and mental health. About this the researchers say: “Cognitive function and thermoregulation appear to be unaffected by CBD while effects on food intake, metabolic function, cardiovascular function, and infection require further study.”

Conclusion

The researchers’ final conclusion tells us that, among the positive effects of CBD, benefits for athletes were found. There is a wide range of skills needed by each athlete for which the physiological, biochemical and psychological effects turn out to be a great advantage.

In any case, the process of research on the CBD benefits is still ongoing, many of the studies done have rarely been conducted in humans and there are multiple contradictions in research work on the subject.
